State Convention Held in Corpus Christi
![]() Registration at the Convention Center The battleship USS Lexington stood guard as we registered on Friday. 277 councils were represented by 637 voting delegates. The convention opened for most of us at 3:30 p.m. with Mass co-celebrated by Bishop Plácido Rodríguez and several priests and deacons. ![]() Pro Life March headed up by Bishop Rodríguez and the 4th Degree Many of us marched to the Federal Building in support of life. We were told we are making a difference and can put an end to abortion if we all take a stand. ![]() ![]() The Convention $75 billion of assets make the Knights of Columbus Insurance one of the few top rated insurance companies in the world. And Texas has above average participation of some kind of insurance among its members. We as Knights donated over $150 million to charities this past year. ![]() Past Supreme Knight Spoke on Saturday and Sunday Virgil C. Dechant was the twelfth Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus from January 21, 1977 to September 30, 2000. Our RSVP program for seminarians stems out of PSK Dechant meeting with Pope Paul VI when Pope Paul asked him to produce vocations from within the Knights of Columbus. ![]() Our New State Chaplain Rev. Msgr. Peter J. Flood, who became our new State Chaplain, talked about the growth of the Body of Christ with each new member and the importance of protecting the church, its children, and justice for those priests who violate that trust. The good news is that nearly 100% of those who work in the church, which is nearly 7 million, have been properly trained to do so. Roman Missal approval to be soonMsgr. Flood asked us all to accept the small changes in the Missal with open arms. ![]() New Member Goals
Several Past State Deputies spoke including Ron Gay, who was present at our first Installation of Officers back in 1996, talked about the importance of bringing in younger members to our organization and we, as a strong force in support of our priests, need to do all we can to save the next generation. Ron concluded by stating that 60% of all children in the U.S. live in one parent homes. From Haiti to Ft. Hood, the wheel chair program has picked up steam throughout the Knights of Columbus as reported by a spokesman, Chris from California and the video he presented at the convention. Plano Council 11716 has donated $22,575 to this nobel cause. Football Frenzy reduces each member's charity donation by nearly $4.00With a 28% increase in participation in the football frenzy game since the program began six years ago, the state has been able to keep the per capita assessment at the same level for these past six years. If you want tickets come to one of our next meetings before the October deadline. ![]() ![]() ![]()
State Officer's Report From outgoing State Deputy Javier Marinez's infectious smile brightening up the opening reports to the boring statistics of the budget that only our Treasurer John Gann would have found exciting, the 106th Texas State Convention was worth the trip.
New IRS laws require every council to file a return. 14 Resolutions were proposed with only one being voted down. The 12th Resolution amended the Texas State Council bylaws by correcting some grammatical errors and a few word changes. In particular, when conducting meetings an "s" was added to the words "ceremonial" and "election" to make them both plural in the first sentence. ![]() Election of Officers All State Officers were elected by acclamation except State Treasurer which was won by Terry Simonton. Our new State Deputy is Tony Herreth. 2011 State Convention in DallasI highly recommend each Knight of our council to consider attending the State Convention next year. Through all the reports, you will leave the convention a better Knight. Vivat Jesus!![]() The Boy Scouts held a flag retirement ceremony and cooked for us before our meeting in April. Read about the meeting in our lastest KnightWriter posted on this site! Good Times at Josephine's with Fr. Frank ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
